Amreeka

Date: December 11, 2009
Time: 5:30 and 8:00 p.m.
Place: Tower Theater
815 E. Olive Avenue, Fresno

Tickets: $10 general, $8 students & seniors

CineCulture, together with Filmworks, presents:

Amreeka (2009) chronicles the adventures of Muna, a single mother who leaves the West Bank with Fadi, her teenage son, with dreams of an exciting future in the promised land of small town Illinois. In America, as her son navigates high school hallways the way he used to move through military checkpoints, the indomitable Muna scrambles together a new life cooking up falafel burgers as well as hamburgers at the local White Castle.

Told with heartfelt humor by writer-director Cherien Dabis, Amreeka is a universal journey into the lives of a family of immigrants and first-generation teenagers caught between their heritage and the new world in which they now live and the bittersweet search for a place to call home.

"Welcome Home Jenny Sutter"

LOOKING INSIDE WAR’S SILENCES

Jenny Sutter (Kelsey Oliver) is home from Iraq. She's a 30-year-old Marine, minus her lower right leg. With a mind filled with horrific memories. Those memories were bad enough while she was overseas. They are unbearable now that she's back in Southern California.

Jenny is struggling to return to civilian life — from the mundane struggle of putting on a pair of pants to the deeper struggle of finding meaning to her life. Jenny is in no shape to return to Oceanside, where her mother is taking care of her two kids.

How the kindness of strangers and Jenny's own inner strength allow her to finally make an attempt to return to the reality of civilian life is the ambitious subject of "Welcome Home, Jenny Sutter," by Julie Marie Myatt, that made its world premiere at Oregon Shakespeare Festival.

On a whim, Jenny decides to accompany the ditsy stranger she meets in the smelly waiting room of a Los Angeles bus station to Slab City. Once there, Jenny finds that Slab City, a ragtag camp ground in the California desert, is chock-a-block full of souls just as lost as she is, each trying to run from their own unpleasant reality.

There is Lou (Kelsey Deroian), who never stops talking. Lou is addicted to absolutely everything and frantically trying to quit them all. But she is generous and empathetic and Jenny hooks up with her if only to find a temporary place to alight.

There is Buddy (Matthew McGee), physically twisted from the abuse he suffered as a child but spiritually straight and gentle. Buddy is the self-appointed preacher to the community, giving a message of love and hope to his unlikely congregation.

There is Donald (Bryce Earp), trying desperately to appear indifferent because he cannot bear to care so much.

And Cheryl (Kelly Derry), Lou's "therapist," who got her "training" from her experience as a hairdresser in the miniscule desert town of Hemet.

All of these misfits reach out to Jenny in one way or another. And gradually — against her instincts — Jenny allows them to get through.

Kathleen McKinley directs. Gwenna Merriman has designed the set, lit by Izzy Eisnidler and Stephanie Bradshaw designed the costumes.

Playwright Julie Marie Myatt grew up in a military family. She has said that she wanted to explore the experiences of the first generation women who have served in combat positions and who can't simply seamlessly reintegrate into civilian life.

Time & Tide

Date: Friday, September 25, 2009
Time: 5:30 P.M
Place: McLane 121

Time & Tide (2005). This film is a poetic and thought-provoking documentary about a land and its people heading towards irreversible tragedy. The story is told through the eyes of a group of expatriates from the tiny island nation of Tuvalu. On their way, they reminisce about the Tuvalu from their memories and eagerly anticipate arriving in their beloved homeland. But their nostalgia quickly gives way to reality and they find themselves ill-prepared for the Tuvalu that awaits them. A multi-million dollar deal with an internet company has brought new development, altering the landscape. As the islanders struggle to deal with severe cultural change due to globalization, a greater threat looms, driven by climate change resulting from global warming. The film takes an unflinching look at the ironic and tragic fate of this remote island country, walking the line between hope and unimaginable loss, painting an honest and endearing portrait of a land and its culture on the brink of extinction.

Viva La Causa Fim Screening & Conversations with Delores Huerta sharing over 50 yrs of Activism

Date: September 18, 2009
Time: 5:30 p.m.
Place: McLane 121

“Conversations with Delores Huerta sharing over 50 yrs of Activism” 4 p.m., McLane 121
Discussant: Dolores Huerta

Viva La Causa (2008). This film illustrates how thousands joined a movement for justice to help the most exploited people in our country — the workers who put food on our tables. The film focuses on the grape strike and boycott led by César Chávez and Dolores Huerta, a seminal event in the march for human rights. As racist rhetoric pollutes the immigration debate, the film could not be timelier. This film tells the story of how the powerless stood up to the powerful and gained their victory, not by violence, but by their strong will.

The events are cosponsored by College of Arts & Humanities, Associated Students Inc., Central Valley Cultural Heritage Institute, Mass Communication & Journalism, Communication and Women's Studies Departments at California State University Fresno, Fresno Free College Foundation, and Women's International League for Peace and Freedom.

The band/orchestra, conducted by Archie Rader and John Webster, is comprised of Fresno State faculty, staff and community members over the age of 50. Each week, band members participate in two hours of group lessons and band/orchestra rehearsals.

An informational meeting will be held on Wednesday, September 2, at 6:30 pm, in the Education Building, Room 140. Adults will have the opportunity to try out various instruments including flutes, clarinets, saxophones, percussion, strings and more under the guidance of local music professionals.

Come join us, even if you’re not quite 50.

Academic Leadership: Magic, Witchcraft, or Sorcery?

DEANS’ SERIES

Reflections from the “Dark Side”: Conversations about Leadership in the Academy

Bill Covino, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs

Date: Thursday, August 27, 2009
Time: 12:00 noon - 1:00 p.m.
Place: Alice Peters Auditorium, UBC 191

Academic Leadership: Magic, Witchcraft, or Sorcery?

With reference to rhetorical touchpoints such as Kenneth Burke's dramatism, J.L. Austin's speech acts, and Mary Daly's Wickedary, I will consider the ways in which our administrative discourse works magic, and how my training in rhetoric has led me to prefer generative magic-discourse (the synergy of multiple perspectives) to arresting magic-discourse ("Stop in the name of the Law!").

William A. Covino became Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs on July 6, 2009. The Provost is the university’s chief academic officer, providing leadership for the University’s eight schools and colleges, grants and research, the library, continuing and global education, and other academic units of the university. The Provost coordinates and implements academic goals, educational policy, curricular planning and development, academic program review, academic personnel actions, faculty and staff development, resource development and allocation, assessment, professional and regional accreditation, and strategic and master academic planning. Provost Covino came to California State University, Fresno after serving as Provost at California State University, Stanislaus, and as Dean of the College of Arts and Letters at Florida Atlantic University. He has also held faculty positions at the University of Illinois at Chicago and San Diego State University. Covino’s administrative priorities and accomplishments have included developing and expanding distinctive academic programs, building greater support for applied scholarly research, improving student learning outcomes, increasing fundraising and partnership opportunities, and encouraging community engagement across the curriculum. His undergraduate and graduate teaching has included courses on rhetoric and literature, and his scholarly record features numerous chapters, articles, and reviews, as well as five books on rhetoric, literacy, imagination, and persuasion. Provost Covino received a PhD in English from the University of Southern California in 1981.

Join us for dialogue and lively conversation on leadership and professional development!

Light refreshments will be served.
