University High School ranks 36th in the Nation as best college prep high school

University High School has been ranked 36th nationally and 5th statewide by the Washington Post’s High School Challenge, which measures how effectively a high-school prepares its students for college.

U.S. News & World Report ranked UHS 36th in the nation as one of the best college prep high schools amongst 27,000 high schools.

In addition, University High School earned its fifth consecutive national championship in the Academic Decathlon for small high schools. This year’s team won by the widest margin and all of its participants medaled individually.

Students from our MCJ 159: Public Relations Cases & Campaigns class are about to launch their “I CAN fight hunger” project for the Salvation Army.

During National Volunteer Week, April 11-17, the students will host a campus-wide campaign in an effort to raise money, food, and mission awareness for the Salvation Army.

They need your help.

MICHELLE BRITTAN has work published or forthcoming in the journals “Crab Creek Review,” “Nimrod,” “The Grove Review,” and “Calyx,” and was the title poet for “Time You Let Me In: 25 Poets Under 25,” an anthology edited by Naomi Shihab Nye. Last year, she won the Ernesto Trejo Poetry Prize. Born in San Francisco of mixed white and Malaysian heritage, she lived in the Pacific Northwest before coming to Fresno.

MIGUEL JIMENEZ was born and raised on Chicago's South Side. Before enrolling in the MFA Creative Writing program at Fresno State, he received his B.A. in English Creative Writing from DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana. He was a contributing writer for “Café Magazine,” and assistant editor for the “Chicago Artists' News.”

MARIO ROSADO left his hometown Los Angeles to escape the savagery of the corporate world so that he can write a novel, leaving behind a salary position for the pursuit of art. He received his B.A. in English Education in 2001 and his Single Subject Teaching Credential in 2005, both from Cal State Long Beach, where he went on to work as a substitute and lead teacher for at-risk youth, and later a security manager for a government facility. He is happy to receive his MFA degree, but has no idea what happens next. He needs your help.

GEORGIA WILLIAMS, after many years devoted to earning tenure as a student at California State University, Fresno, earning a B.A., a M.A. in Literature, and now, at least, a MFA in Creative Writing, plans to take her show on the road. She hopes to turn her thesis into a published book and her teaching talents into a full-time teaching gig, one that allows her time to transform aforementioned thesis into aforementioned book. As Pope noted, hope springs eternal.

Psycho: Fresno Filmworks presents Psycho at the Tower Theatre. The 1960 thriller, directed by Alfred Hitchcock, will be shown in 35 mm, starring Anthony Perkins, Janet Leigh, Vera Miles, and John Gavin. The movie tells the story of a secretary trying to escape her unhappy relationship by stealing money from her employer. The woman stops at a motel managed by a quiet young man who lives with his mentally ill mother. She is mysteriously murdered.

The abortion debate focuses on beliefs about fetal status. The concept of fetal innocence is critical for clarifying the difference between moral and religious viewpoints. Conflicting moral and religious perspectives on innocence points toward First Amendment protection and a practical “solution” to the abortion debate.

Lloyd Steffen is Professor of Religion Studies, University Chaplain, and Director of the Center for Dialogue, Ethics and Spirituality at Lehigh University. He is the author of seven books, including Life/Choice: The Theory of Just Abortion, He has served as representative to the U.N. for the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice.

About Cherríe Moraga: For the past three decades, Moraga has contributed richly to Chican@, feminist, and gay and lesbian studies, as well as to American theater. With Gloria Anzaldúa she coedited THIS BRIDGE CALLED MY BACK (1981), which became one of the foundational texts of Third Wave feminism. She has since authored many books and garnered numerous awards, including for HEROES AND SAINTS (1994), a play that centers on the pesticide poisoning in the San Joaquin Valley town of McFarland in the 1980s. A recent argument in the neuroethics literature has suggested that (i) the discovery of brain-mental-state identities could settle epistemological uncertainties about animal minds and (ii) dismantle the deadlock over their moral status. I will argue that (i) does not so much help us resolve the problem of other animal minds as mark its resolution. (ii) is grounded in a naive view of how our views of animals as subjects impact our moral relations with them. Focusing on animal research, I will argue that what is required is a sea change in the perceived grounds for human moral obligations to nonhumans.

Based on a true story, SKIN is one of the most moving stories to emerge from apartheid South Africa: Sandra Laing is a black child born in the 1950s to white Afrikaners, unaware of their black ancestry. Her parents are rural shopkeepers serving the local black community, who lovingly bring her up as their ‘white’ little girl. But at the age of ten, Sandra is driven out of white society. The film follows Sandra’s thirty-year journey from rejection to acceptance, betrayal to reconciliation, as she struggles to define her place in a changing world - and triumphs against all odds. Sarah Wetzel Poetry Reading

Sarah Wetzel, last year's winner of the Philip Levine Poetry Book prize, will read from her winning book Bathsheba Transatlantic on Friday, February 25 at 7:00 p.m. at the Peters Educational Center (in the Student Recreation Center at Fresno State.

Sarah Wetzel is a poet, essayist, and engineer. She grew up a daughter of the American South, but somehow ended up in Israel after job-hopping across the Americas and Europe. Sarah graduated from Georgia Tech in 1989, and in 1997, received a MBA from The University of California, Berkeley.

She completed a MFA in Creative Writing from Bennington College in January 2009. Nominated for a Pushcart Prize for 2009, her work has most recently been published or is forthcoming in US publications including Rattle, Pedestal, Stirring, DecomP, Folly, TwoReview, Shampoo, and Eclectica, and in Israeli publications including Cyclamens and Swords. She currently lives in Israel with her husband, four step children, and one needy dog.

Revolution Egypt: What Happened? What Now?

The world witnessed 18 remarkable days in Tahrir Square, a grand uprising of defiance that toppled an autocrat. We saw the final act play out, like a theatrical production, in real time. But what to call the revolution that ended three decades of Hosni Mubarak’s iron grip in Egypt?

Was it primarily a rebellion of youth hungry for democracy? A revolt of discontent over rising food prices and other forms of economic injustice? What was the true role of Facebook and Twitter? How can the revolution be understood in the context of Egypt’s modern history? What did it share with other uprisings of the past decades--in Tunisia, in Iran, in the Philippines, in Tiananmen Square? And what will rise now in Egypt, a land not new to revolution?

These questions will frame a provocative panel discussion

Mark Arax, journalist and author who holds the Roger Tatarian Chair in Mass Communication and Journalism will moderate the panel that includes the following Middle East scholars:

Nubar Hovsepian, an Egyptian-born political scientist who teaches at Chapman University and is the author of The War on Lebanon: a Reader, Olive Branch Press, 2007; Palestinian State Formation: Education and the Construction of National Identity, 2008. He has written numerous articles in such venues as the Journal of Palestine and Arab Studies Quarterly. His most recent article “The Arab-Pro-Democracy Movement: Struggles to Redefine Citizenship,” appeared in Jadaliyya, 9 February 2011.

Sameh A. Elkhrabawy, Professor of Art and Design and author of several articles on Egyptian society and cultural politics, who just returned from Egypt, where he witnessed some of the remarkable events in Tahrir Square and Alexandria.

Sasan Fayazmanesh, Emeritus Professor of Economics and author of The United States and Iran: Sanctions, wars and the policy of dual containment, Routledge 2008, Money and Exchange: Folktales and Reality, Routledge 2006, and numerous articles on US policy in the Middle East.

Randa Jarrar, Professor of Creative Writing and author of award winning novel A Map of Home, Other Press 2008/Penguin 2009, and numerous other works published in venues such as Ploughshares.

The public is invited to an exclusive Central Valley showing of a new film, “Library of the Early Mind,” a documentary film about contemporary books for young people. The 85-minute movie explores the art and impact of children's literature on our kids, our culture, and ourselves. The film features 40 prominent authors and illustrators, including Gregory Maguire, Lemony Snicket, Nancy Garden, Jerry Pinkney, Brian Selznick, and more. January 14: Wasteland (2010): Directed by Lucy Walker, this documentary from Brazil and the UK, which won an Audience Award at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival, follows artist Vik Muniz as he journeys from his home in Brooklyn to his native Brazil and the world’s largest garbage dump, Jardim Gramacho, located on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro. Muniz photographs an eclectic band of “catadores,” or self-designated pickers of recyclable materials. The artist’s initial objective was to paint the catadores by using garbage, but his collaboration with these inspiring characters as they re-create photographic images of themselves out of trash reveals both the dignity and the despair of the catadores. As the catadores begin to re-imagine their lives, the movie offers stirring evidence of the transformative power of art, with a score by electronic musician Moby. In English, 90 minutes.

Drummer Steve Smith, saxophonist George Brooks, and guitarist Prasanna - three remarkable musical talents expressing a distinctly twenty-first century perspective on global music - have collaborated on a new recording entitled Raga Bop Trio. Steve Smith, George Brooks and Prasanna released Raga Bop Trio in July 2010 on the AbstractLogix label. They are touring together as The Raga Bop Trio during November and December 2010.

The music of The Raga Bop Trio is unique in that the group’s direction is grounded in jazz, with its focus on groove, atmosphere and harmonic adventure, yet also deeply rooted in the rhythmic and melodic traditions of Indian classical music.

Dr. Nancy Gallagher is Professor of Middle East History and previous Chair of Middle East Studies Program at UCSB. Her areas of expertise and research include Comparative Gender History, Comparative Race and Ethnicity, and the Modern Middle East.

Dr. Gallagher teaches undergraduate and graduate courses including a Proseminar on Women and Gender in the Modern Middle East and North Africa; Post colonial and Postmodern Discourses on Africa and the Middle East; Women and Gender in Middle Eastern history.

A scholar and mentor in Middle East Women’s Studies, Dr. Gallagher is Co-editor of the Journal of Middle East Women’s Studies, the official publication of the Association for Middle East Women’s Studies, a multidisciplinary, international organization affiliated with the Middle East Studies Association, for which she has served as Past-president.

Currently Dr. Gallagher is working on a book entitled “Women and Islam: Human Rights and Activism” under contract to Routledge Press. Her previous publications include:

Quakers in the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict (American University in Cairo Press, 2007). Early efforts by peacemakers in the world’s longest refugee crisis.

Pulitzer prize–winning author and journalist Chris Hedges charts the dramatic and disturbing rise of a post-literate society that craves fantasy, ecstasy, and illusion. Hedges argues in his new book, Empire of Illusion, that we now live in two societies. One, the minority, functions in a print-based, literate world that can cope with complexity and can separate illusion from truth. The other, a growing majority, is retreating from a reality-based world into one of false certainty and
magic. In this “other society,” serious film and theatre, as well as newspapers and books, are being pushed to the margins.

The Henry Madden Library is currently hosting an exhibition of photographs documenting the 100-year history of California State University, Fresno.

The exhibition runs through Sept. 27 at the Leon S. Peters Ellipse Gallery on the second floor of the library’s Table Mountain Rancheria Tower.

A detailed timeline highlights Fresno State’s evolution through the decades from a state normal school training teachers for the region to a 21st-century university offering training in scores of fields through eight academic colleges and schools.

Showcased are some of the best and most-treasured historic photos from the University Archives, as well as memorabilia that highlights Fresno State's enduring strong connection with the community.

Earth (1998): Adapted from Bapsi Sidhwa’s novel Cracking India, (a New York Times Notable Book of the Year), and directed by Deepa Mehta, the movie opens in Lahore of 1947 before India and Pakistan became independent. It is a cosmopolitan city, depicted by the coterie of working class friends who are from different religions. The rest of the movie chronicles the fate of this group and the maddening religious that sweeps even this city as the partition of the two countries is decided and Lahore is given to Pakistan. English, Urdu, Hindi, Punjabi, and Parsee, with English subtitles, 110 minutes.

Internationally acclaimed author Bapsi Sidhwa was raised in Lahore, Pakistan. She is an award winning Pakistani novelist striving above all to bring women's issues of the Indian subcontinent into public discussion. She graduated from Kinnaird College for Women, Lahore. Her 5 novels: Cracking India, The Pakistani Bride, The Crow Eaters, An American Brat, and Water, have been translated and published in several languages. Her novel Water is based on Mehta’s film of the same name. Her anthology City of Sin and Splendour: Writings on Lahore was published in 2006. Sidhwa’s play, An American Brat, was produced by Stages Repertory Theater in Houston March 2007 and received critical acclaim. Her play, Sock ’em With Honey, played in London in 2003.

Among her many honors Sidhwa received the Bunting Fellowship at Radcliffe/Harvard, the Lila Wallace-Reader's Digest Writer's Award, the Sitara-i-Imtiaz, Pakistan's highest national honor in the arts, and the LiBeraturepreis in Germany and the 2007 Primo Mondello Award in Italy. Sidhwa, who was on the advisory committee to Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto on Women's Development has taught at Columbia University, University of Houston, Mount Holyoke College, Southampton University and Brandeis.

Fresno State Receives 1 Million-Dollar Endowment to Create Arts Center

An anonymous donor has made a $1 million endowment for California State University, Fresno, for the creation of a Center for Creativity and Arts, announced President John D. Welty today.

According to the university, the center will create interdisciplinary, university-wide thematic exhibitions involving all of the schools and colleges at Fresno State. The center won't occupy any particular physical space, but would use existing spaces on campus depending on the needs of the exhibition, whether it be a gallery, lecture hall, performance space or other uses.

The endowment, from a donor who wished to remain anonymous, will create the John and Madeline Perenchio Arts Exhibition Endowment and the Andrew and Dorothea Perenchio Museum Studies Internship Endowment.

Andrew and Dorothea Perenchio are the parents of Los Angeles billionaire Jerry Perenchio, a Fresno native and former chairman and CEO of Spanish-language television network Univision.

The Center for Creativity and Arts concept was created last spring when Fresno State was asked to assist the Fresno Art Museum through financial problems. The center's exhibitions will include cinema, music, dance, theatre, readings, lectures and hands-on learning opportunities.

"This rich array will provide students and the broader community easy access to through-provoking art, visiting guest artist is and lecturers and stimulating educational programs," according to a university statement.

Each year the center will focus on a theme, with the first being "Labor, Immigration and Migration."

Citing an example of the interdisciplinary concept for the center using the "Labor, Immigration and Migration" theme, "the Department of Chicano and Latin American studies might present on the history of political-economic relationships between the global north and the global south; the Women’s Studies Program on feminist organizing around migration and economic exploitation in Guatemala; while the Department of Criminology could report on the relationship between labor migration and the Juárez murders," according to the university.

Artistic programming around the theme could include music, lectures, dance, plays, movies, book readings, participatory art, exhibitions, poetry and history writing assignments.

College of Arts and Humanities Associate Dean José Diaz will serve as the center's interim director.

Before joining the Foundation in 1993, Bob served as the endowed McElroy Professor of Youth Leadership Studies at the University of Northern Iowa. He is a member of a number of organizations, including the Jackie Joyner-Kersee Foundation Board of Directors, Woman & Philanthropy, the Association of Black Foundation Executives, and Grantmakers for Effective Organizations. Born and raised in rural Illinois, Bob earned a Doctor of Philosophy degree in educational leadership and evaluation from the University of Illinois. He studied the effects of financial decline on the leadership of community education programs. His current interests include the relationship between youth development and community development and the role of service in building the capacity of young people to become contributing members of society. Bob has developed programs and published in the areas of youth leadership, diversity, nonprofit management, and philanthropy.

Directed by Deepa Mehta. Adapted from Bapsi Sidhwa’s novel Cracking India, the movie opens in Lahore of 1947 before India and Pakistan became independent. It is a cosmopolitan city, depicted by the coterie of working class friends who are from different religions. The rest of the movie chronicles the fate of this group and the maddening religious that sweeps even this city as the partition of the two countries is decided and Lahore is given to Pakistan. In her feature-film debut, Women Without Men, renowned visual artist Shirin Neshat offers an exquisitely crafted view of Iran in 1953, when a British and American backed coup removed the democratically elected government. Adapted from the novel by Iranian author Shahrnush Parsipur, the film weaves together the stories of five individual women during those traumatic days, whose experiences are shaped by their faith and the social structures in place. Looking at Iran from Neshat’s point of view allows us to see the larger picture and realize that the human community resembles different organs of one body, created from a common essence.

The film follows several unaccompanied child migrants as they journey through Mexico en route to the U.S. on a freight train they call “ The Beast.” Director Rebecca Cammisa tracks the stories of children like Olga and Freddy, nine-year old Hondurans who are desperately trying to reach their families in Minnesota, and Jose, a ten-year-old El Salvadoran who has been abandoned by smugglers and ends up alone in a Mexican detention center, and focuses on Kevin, a canny, streetwise 14-year-old Honduran, whose mother hopes that he will reach New York City and send money back to his family. These are stories of hope and courage, disappointment and sorrow. Nick Flynn is a guest artist in residence with the CSU Summer Arts "Writing the Memoir" course.

Mr. Flynn's recent memoir published in January 2010, The Ticking is the Bomb, came out to critical acclaim. His first memoir, Another Bullshit Night in Suck City, won the PEN/Martha Albrand Award, was shortlisted for France's Prix Femina, and has been translated into thirteen languages. In addition, the book is being develped into a film starring Robert De Niro and Casey Affleck scheduled for release in 2011.

The play is a musical adaptation of Frank L. Baum’s Ozma of Oz. In this re-imagined version, Dorothy (Sarah Lofgren), Bill (her pet chicken – Molly Kelly) and her Uncle Henry (a crotchety old man in a wheelchair – Matthew McGee) are transported to Oz by a wild storm at sea. Time has been stopped in Oz for what seems like years. After run-ins with the Gnome King (Edward Anderson) and the Wheelers, Dorothy is sure she doesn’t want to have another adventure here. But she soon finds herself embroiled in Oz affairs.

Nanking (2007). Directed by Bill Guttentag and Dan Sturman, this film is a powerful, reminder of the heartbreaking cost of war. The film tells the story of the Japanese invasion of Nanking, China, in the early days of World War II. The Japanese army invaded China’s capital city in 1937, unleashing a horrific onslaught of murder and rape. In the midst of the rampage, a small group of Westerners banded together to establish a Safety Zone where over 200,000 Chinese found refuge. Unarmed, these missionaries, university professors, doctors and businessmen bore witness to the events, while risking their own lives to protect civilians from slaughter.

The story is told through deeply moving interviews with Chinese survivors, chilling archival footage and photos of the events, and testimonies of former Japanese soldiers. At the heart of Nanking is a filmed stage reading of the Westerners’ letters and diaries, featuring Woody Harrelson, Mariel Hemingway and Jurgen Prochnow. Through its interweave of archival images, testimonies of survivors, and readings of first-hand accounts, the film puts the viewer on the streets of Nanking and brings the forgotten past to startling life.

Nanking is a testament to the courage and conviction of individuals who were determined to act in the face of evil and a powerful tribute to the resilience of the Chinese people – a gripping account of light in the darkest of times. 90 min.

Central Station (1998). Director Walter Salles tells a profoundly moving tale of the human spirit. Inside Rio de Janeiro’s bustling Central Station, two very unlikely souls are about to become inextricably linked. When a young boy witnesses his mother’s accidental death, a lonely retired schoolteacher reluctantly takes the child under her wing. Although initially distrustful of each other, the two form an uncommon bond as they venture from the bustling city to Brazil’s barren and remote northeast region in search of the boy’s father. Together, the two embark on a journey of the heart that restores the woman’s spirit and teaches the child precious life lessons. This highly acclaimed film received numerous awards, including a Golden Globe and two Academy Award nominations. In Portuguese with English subtitles. 113 min.

Dr. William Ayers is founder of both the Small Schools Workshop and the Center for Youth and Society, teaches courses in interpretive and qualitative research, urban school change, and teaching and the modern predicament. A graduate of the University of Michigan, the Bank Street College of Education, Bennington College, and Teachers College, Columbia University, Ayers has written extensively about social justice, democracy and education, the cultural contexts of schooling, and teaching as an essentially intellectual, ethical, and political enterprise. He is currently the vice-president of the curriculum division of the American Educational Research Association, and a member of the executive committee of the UIC Faculty Senate.

Ayers' articles have appeared in many journals including the Harvard Educational Review, the Journal of Teacher Education, Teachers College Record, Rethinking Schools, The Nation, Educational Leadership, the New York Times and the Cambridge Journal of Education. His has authored and co-authored several books including To Teach: The Journey of a Teacher (Teachers College Press, 1993), which was named Book of the Year in 1993 by Kappa Delta Pi and won the Witten Award for Distinguished Work in Biography and Autobiography in 1995.

Despite the growing literature on the Armenian Genocide in recent decades, little has been written about the post-Genocide history of the Armenians or their decades-long struggle for justice in the face of Turkish denial of this atrocity. This lecture fills that gap by closely analyzing this period through the use of previously untapped archives and Freedom of Information Requests.

Copies of Bobelian's book, "Children of Armenia:A Forgotten Genocide and the Century-long Struggle for Justice " will be available for sale at the lecture.

Created in collaboration with, and catalyzed by insight of Tanzanian educators, health justice and artistic activists

Inviting all invested in global and cultural studies, performance, public health, and community development to a performance of critical ethnography.

Marie Garlock comes alive in listening, movement and collaboration; and in art moving for new possibility, for health and for dignity. This has taken shape in modern and African dance, cultural and spiritual storytelling, composition of motion and spoken word, health justice/arts organizing, and the discovery of critical ethnography performance. She enjoys being able to question, envision and journey along with an audience, as part of an experience that breathes, coming alive in the vitality of bodies present with one another. Previously envisioning a career in law and politics, she is learning that performance is perhaps most practical in its humanity - effective and living because of the inextricable body, ever-questioning spirit and mind that yearns for expansion through the company of others. She is drawn to work that is magnetizing as it recognizes the capability of restlessness, goodwill and transferable knowledge in all of us. This is where art makes your heart leap; where the notion of justice compels art. In pursuit, solidarity, as witness, spark, as not just end, but beginning.

Garlock's recent work includes performing in a quartet of African, Balinese and Ballet/Modern Dance fused with Tai Chi, set by powerful South African choreographer Vincent Mantsoe; a staged reading of "Trojan Barbie," a feminist car crash encounter with Euripedes' "Trojan Women"; work with an interactive forum theatre group at UNC surrounding issues of sexuality, sexual assault, body image and race; and curation of a regional celebration of dance and best practices in direct-service HIV initiatives co-founded with Dr. Chuck Davis in 2006, the Triangle Dance Festival for AIDS.

Tomás and the Library Lady

Tomás is a son of migrant workers. Every summer he and his family follow the crops north from Texas to Iowa, spending long, arduous days in the fields. At night they gather around to hear Grandfather's wonderful stories. But before long, Tomás knows all the stories by heart. "There are more stories in the library," Papa Grande tells him. The very next day, Tomás meets the library lady and a whole new world opens up for him.

Emily Kuroda completed seven years as Mrs. Kim in Warner Brothers’ GILMORE GIRLS. She was also a series regular on UNDER ONE ROOF with Flavor Flav. Other television credits include GREY’S ANATOMY, SIX FEET UNDER, KING OF QUEENS, CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM, THE PRACTICE, GENERAL HOSPITAL, PORT CHARLES, ER, THE DIVISION, THE AGENCY, PRESIDIO MED and ARLISS.
