Lian Ensemble – Sound of Mystical World Music
Friday, October 17th 8:00 pm
Based in Los Angeles , The Lian Ensemble is a group of virtuoso performers and composers. Their powerful compositions fuse the mystical Persian musical heritage with the contemporary sensibilities of contemporary Jazz. Combining a unique musical vision with dauntless dedication to experimentation, they create a synthesis of mystical world music composed of traditional and folk melodies and instruments. The Lian is comprised of world-renowned musicians whose diverse and uniquely versatile musical styles lend to this rare blend of mystical world music. Lian’s music flows effortlessly between a diverse range of styles and traditions, while fearlessly forging a path and sound that is all their own. Los Angeles Times writes, “The Lian Ensemble’s music-original compositions written and improvised in class on its own terms”. After much collaboration, the musicians have acquired the requisite knowledge of Persian music, and each adds their own distinctive rhythmic sounds to compositions, creating an exciting mix of melodies that go beyond the stylistic boundaries. In performance, Lian’s ever evolving repertoire of creative original music is expanded, rearranged, and examined with exploratory eyes at each and every concert.

Oct. 17: My Country My Country (2006). 90 mins. Director Laura Poitrascreates an extraordinarily intimate portrait of Iraqis living under U.S.occupation. Her principal focus is Dr. Riyadh, an Iraqi medical doctor, father of six and Sunni political candidate. An outspoken critic of theoccupation, he is equally passionate about the need to establishdemocracy in Iraq. Yet all around him, Dr. Riyadh sees only chaos, ashis waiting room fills each day with patients suffering the physical andmental effects of ever-increasing violence. Dramatically interwoven intothe personal journey of Dr. Riyadh is the landscape of the U.S. militaryoccupation, with Australian private security contractors, Americanjournalists and the U.N. officials who orchestrated the 2005 elections. The film captures the downward spiral of one man caught in the tragiccontradictions of the U.S. occupation of Iraq and its project to spreaddemocracy in the Middle East.

Arne Nixon Center Advocates (ANCA) Annual Meeting

Susan Yost-Filgate, author and co-creator of the Rip Squeak® picture book series, will be the featured speaker at the Arne Nixon Center Advocates (ANCA) annual meeting, to be held on Friday, October 24, at The Smittcamp Alumni House on the Fresno State campus. A reception will be held at 6 p.m., followed by the talk at 6:30 p.m. This event is free and open to the public.

The Rip Squeak® series was created by Susan Yost-Filgate and her husband, illustrator Leonard Filgate, in 1997. These picture books feature Rip Squeak, an adventurous mouse, his sister Jesse, and their friends, Abbey the kitten and Euripides the frog. The original three Rip Squeak books will be available for sale and autographing at this event.

The Filgates, who moved to Fresno three years ago, first sold their books through a German publisher who exhibited them at the Frankfurt Book Fair, where they were discovered by an American publisher. Now the books, art prints, and numerous other products are sold in bookstores throughout the U.S. and at Rip Squeak® Galleries in Carmel, Monterey, San Diego, San Francisco, and Lahina, Hawaii. The books and galleries have proved so successful that the Filgates have recruited additional artists and writers to help with production.

Seating is limited: please call (559) 278-8116 or send email to mrianto@csufresno.edu to make a reservation.
