Conley Art Gallery presents the Annual Student Exhibition

This Thursday, Dec. 11, 5:00-8:00 p.m., the Fresno State Conley Art Gallery presents the Annual Student Exhibition. It features a large variety of artworks submitted by Fresno State students and juried by community art leaders George Blair and Diadre Metlzler. This special exhibition has been coordinated by students enrolled in the Gallery Management class under instructor Carol Hartman. The student curators are Kristen Kennedy and Corrine Attenhofer.

Excellence is reflected in the variety of mediums presented for display, including painting, drawing, sculpture, glass, printmaking, photography, video, animation, performance, bronze, and ceramics. The Department has approximately 600 BA students and 40 MA students.

A recent consultation from Andrew W. Polk III, Professor of Art from University of Arizona, in preparation for Fresno State's application for membership in the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD), resulted in his statement, ... "I do not believe I have ever visited a program with more dedication to its students, as demonstrated by faculty, staff, administrators, and overall institutional attitude, than what I observed at Fresno State and its Department of Art and Design. The positive impact is compounded by the excellence of the faculty, the richness of its curriculum, and its other resources available to students. Perhaps the best measure of educational success is to be found in the quality of student work..."

In light of the recent reductions of funding and classes being offered in the arts throughout our California educational system, the quality of artwork in this exhibition is found to be remarkable. The Fresno State faculty are to be commended for nurturing such talents in their students, many of whom have had limited previous opportunities to study the arts.

The President's Gallery, in Thomas Administration Building, will be hosting a reception for (faculty member) Edward Gillum's exhibition "To2Too" from 5:00-8:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 11, 2008.

The Dean's Gallery, in the Music Building, will be hosting a reception for

"The Armenian Folk Epic of David of Sasun"

Wednesday, November 5, 2008
7:30 PM

Daredevils of Sasun occupies a unique place in world epic heritage. It was created in the medieval period. But already in this fact one can see a contradiction. The large epic monuments were created at the beginning of their national history (as "Odysseus" and "Iliad", "Gilgamesh", Indian epic poems, etc.). Armenian history and culture take their origin in the dark depths of human history. In the IX-XI centuries, the Armenians were a people with rich and difficult history, but it was just then that the Armenian epic Daredevils of Sasun was born.
Dr. Yeghiazaryan will discuss the significance of Daredevils of Sasun to both Armenian culture and world culture.

Shiloh Rules

SHILOH RULES, by Doris Baizley, is a comedy about Civil War re-enactors staging the bloody battle of Shiloh. The re-enactors gather on the actual battlefield in West Tennessee. Among them are Clara May Abbott (Carly Oliver), a hardcore Union nurse re-enactor and her young trainee, Meg (Nicole Arbino). Clara has won honors at past events and hungers for more. Her fierce rival is Cecilia Pettison (Samantha Calabrese), a hardcore Confederate refugee re-enactor. She is also aided by a trainee, LucyGale (Natalie Row). The trainees don't share the narrow obsession of their mentors; they're at Shiloh for the novelty, for academic credit and to meet guys. Another amusing character is the Widow Beckwith (Danielle Jorn), a concessionaire who's out to gather dollars from both sides. Another, Officer Wilson (Brittney Caldwell), is a U.S. Park Guard who likes peace and quiet and is not particularly interested in the Civil War. She will have her hands full trying to keep order. Terry Miller directs this University Theatre production opening October 31st running through November 8th.

WOMACK LECTURE TO FEATURE KRIST NOVOSELIC WITH "BLUEPRINT FOR A 21ST CENTURY DEMOCRACY"

Krist Novoselic was a founding member of the legendary rock band Nirvana. Along with bandmates Kurt Cobain and David Grohl, he helped to change the course of music history in 1992 when Nirvana snapped up Billboard magazine's number one spot with their highly acclaimed album Nevermind. The album went on to sell millions of copies around theworld. Nirvana opened the doors for a new generation of musicians and bands. It was a band with a conscience, and as a major label act they regularly played benefits--the first Rock For Choice show, a major concert in support of gay rights, and a legendary gig that raised money for the Balkan Women's Aid Fund.
After Nirvana, Novoselic went on to become one of rock music's most politically minded musicians. He has committed himself to numerous community projects and is now an influential political voice in Washington State. He is Chairman of Fairvote, an organiztion advocating election reforms that are revolutionizing our democracy.
Novoselic is the author of Of Grunge and Government--Let's Fix This Broken Democracy, which the New York Times' Review of Books said "is lucid, unpretentious and, as the architect Louis Sullivan once described the ideal of democracy, 'thrillingly sane.'" Novoselic currently lives in southwest Washington State, where he hosts a bi-monthly radio show on Coast Community Radio and writes a weekly column for the Seattle Weekly On-Line.

Slaughter of the Innocents
By William Saroyan
Directed by Edward EmanuEl
West Coast Premiere - A WILLIAM SAROYAN CENTENNIAL Event

Saroyan pulls no punches in describing how devastatingly fragile democracy and freedom really are. This is unmistakably Saroyan, with his sentimental yet probing concern for people as human beings; it is Saroyan at his most intelligent and most meaningful. The story is that of a bartender (James Taylor) whose saloon has been confiscated to be used for public trials by the new police state. Juries have been dispensed with; the victims are marched in on an assembly line, accused, sentenced, then marched out through the back door to be shot while the populace cheers in wild enthusiasm. When a small boy (Atticus Martin) is run through in this fashion, the bartender rebels, throwing a large monkey wrench into the smoothly running mechanism. Then comes the directive: the six officials are to change places with the next six victims. Thus it is that the people come to a realization of the meaning of justice in a democracy.

"The Folk Traditions of Musa Dagh"

The California State University, Fresno Armenian Studies Program and Musa Dagh Compatriotic Union presents "The Folk Traditions of Musa Dagh" by Sona Zeitlian

Wednesday, October 1, 2008 at 7:30 p.m.
University Business Center * Alice Peters Auditorium

The Folk Traditions of Musa Dagh-The folktales are vehicles of age-old manners, customs and folk wisdom. As such, they are instruments for asserting cultural identity, based on shared experiences and values. The oral tradition has been central to the lives of Musa Daghtsis as a form of popular entertainment during festivals and especially as a means to while away the long winter nights. Its importance has waned as the living conditions have changed after the relocation of Musa Daghtsis to Anjar, Lebanon. Recording the oral tradition of Musa Daghtsis has convinced Zeitlian that at a time of cultural globalization through the internet and the international mass media, the folktales are more than ever valuable in preserving our traditions and national identity.

Summer 2009 Fulbright-Hays Group Study Abroad

Call for Participation

Discovering the Egyptian Landscape:
The People, the Land and the Culture

In Summer 2009, the College of Arts and Humanities at California State University, Fresno proposes a four-week Study Abroad program in Egypt. The program will be lead by Dr. A. Sameh El Kharbawy (Associate Professor of Art and Design; College of Arts and Humanities) and sponsored by a Fulbright-Hays grant, pending funding approval.

Fifteen members of the California State University, Fresno faculty and/or graduate students will be selected to participate in this Group Study Abroad. Participants will be immersed in Egypt’s history and its visual culture and will have access to people, places and geographies that no tourist could ever hope to encounter. Through carefully designed lectures, conferences with local artists, architects, and musicians, visits to historic and modern sites, museums, and monuments, the remarkable story of ancient and modern Egypt will begin to unfold.

The program participants will discover the unique identity Egypt constructs out of its rich historical heritage, on the one hand, and the cultural pluralism with which it embodies the modern Middle East on the other. Anyone who has ever been to Egypt is immediately struck by its unity and coherence, on the one hand, and the magnificent variety of peoples, languages, architectures, and cultures that make up its modern story, on the other. And with developed institutions and active civic dynamics, Egypt also opens a unique window to the Middle East’s modern culture and society. It is this complex landscape that will be the focus of this program.

The four-week study tour begins and ends in Cairo. With the city as our classroom, the group will visit monuments of ancient and modern art and architecture (mosques, churches, synagogues, shrines, houses, libraries, tea-houses, museums and modern universities.) Beyond Cairo, the group will travel to a number of important historical and cultural sites in Egypt: from Greco-Roman sites in North Egypt to the ancient Egyptian monuments in the South; from Egypt’s authentic countryside, to its desert landscape; from its modern cities (Cairo, Alexandria) to its unique post-modern (and ecologically centered) face on the Eastern coast. Along the way, the group will receive numerous lectures and workshops from leading scholars, craft masters, musicians, artists, calligraphers and local academics.

In addition to improving the participants’ understanding of Egyptian culture and that of the region, this program will provide its participants with experiences and knowledge that they can incorporate into their teaching and scholarship on Egypt and the Middle East.

Applications due Tuesday, Sept 9, 2008.

To apply:

Application Process: Faculty and Graduate students are required to submit written application materials and participate in an interview as follows:

1. Letter of Interest specifying:
a) reason for interest
b) identification of personal and professional strengths that would contribute to the project
c) related research interests

a) personal impact
b) commitment to curricular change by identifying and explaining how at least one to two courses might undergo pedagogical and/or curricular change
c) plans for dissemination of knowledge via scholarship
d) plans for dissemination of knowledge to the external and internal communities

3. Personal Interviews. Applicants will meet Key Personnel to assess the above items, communication skills, and their likely success of achieving project goals and objectives.

Selection Process: The Key Personnel will review and select 15 faculty participants with two alternates. The selection process will be consistent with the university’s non-discriminatory, equal opportunity policies. The diversity of the selected participants will reflect the diversity of the College and University.

The following criteria will be used:

1. Interest in improving curriculum and the community
2. Knowledge of or desire to learn about Egyptian and Middle Eastern culture and its contributions to contemporary society
3. Quality of submitted Individual Project Proposals

Film Screening

Voices of Pain Voices of Hope

Friday, September 5
5:30 P.M
McLane 121

Dr. Jerome Rabow (2005), 43 min. Despite the considerable social advances of the 21st century, intolerance remains a persistent problem in the modern world. Education is the only solution: by admitting prejudices within ourselves, can we take the next step of shedding these negative attributes. Professor Rabow’s Sociology class at UCLA puts this theory to the test as he moderates the discussion among ethnically and culturally diverse students in his class, encouraging the flow of ideas and creating an atmosphere in which students can share their views on and experiences with racism, sexism and homophobia. The goal is to create a dialogue, encouraging the participants to discuss the issues at hand while questioning their own attitudes, forcing them to come to terms with their own self-worth, self-image and cultural pride. Post-screening discussion by Dr. Jerome Rabow (UCLA).

Katja von Garnier, 2004. 123 min. This film "recounts for a contemporary audience a key chapter in U.S. history: in this case, the struggle of suffragists who fought for the passage of the 19th Amendment. Focusing on the two defiant women, Alice Paul (Hilary Swank) and Lucy Burns(Frances O'Connor), the film shows how these activists broke from the mainstream women's-rights movement and created a more radical wing, daring to push the boundaries of political protest to secure women's voting rights in 1920." From the cover of The United States and Iran Sanctions, Wars and the Policy of Dual Containment:

When and why did the United States policy of containment of Iran come about? How did it evolve? Where is it going?

Much has been said about the US policy of dual containment, particularly as it pertains to Iraq. However, there has been little in-depth analysis of this policy when it comes to Iran. Sasan Fayazmanesh explores this often neglected subject by examining the history of this policy. . . . This topical read synthesizes a range of primary sources, including firsthand reports, newspaper articles, and electronic media, and presents a coherent analysis of the ebbs and flows in US thinking on Iran and Iraq. It will be of interest to International Relations and Middle East specialists for decades to come.

Evelyn gives more than 100 performances a year worldwide, performing with the greatest conductors, orchestras, and artists. For the first ten years of her career virtually every performance she gave was in some way a first. Her diversity of collaborations have included performances artists such as Nana Vasoncelos, Kodo, Bela Fleck, Bjork, Bobby McFerrin, Sting, Emmanuel Ax, Kings Singers, Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Fred Frith.

Evelyn has commissioned one hundred and fifty new works for solo percussion from many of the world's most eminent composers and also composes and records music for film and television (EG Composer). Her first high quality drama produced a score so original she was nominated for a British Academy of Film and Television Arts awards (BAFTA's); the UK equivalent of the Oscars.

Out of the 25 recordings made so far, Evelyn's first CD, Bartok's Sonata for two Pianos and Percussion won her a Grammy in 1988. A further two Grammy nominations followed, one of which she won for a collaboration with Bela Fleck. Evelyn's twelfth solo CD, Shadow Behind the Iron Sun (BMG Records) was based on a radical improvisational concept and has once again questioned people's expectations. More of her bio can found on her website: http://www.evelyn.co.uk/. An interpreter for the hearing impaired will be at this event.
