Despite the growing literature on the Armenian Genocide in recent decades, little has been written about the post-Genocide history of the Armenians or their decades-long struggle for justice in the face of Turkish denial of this atrocity. This lecture fills that gap by closely analyzing this period through the use of previously untapped archives and Freedom of Information Requests.
Copies of Bobelian's book, "Children of Armenia:A Forgotten Genocide and the Century-long Struggle for Justice " will be available for sale at the lecture.

"The Armenian Folk Epic of David of Sasun"
7:30 PM
Daredevils of Sasun occupies a unique place in world epic heritage. It was created in the medieval period. But already in this fact one can see a contradiction. The large epic monuments were created at the beginning of their national history (as "Odysseus" and "Iliad", "Gilgamesh", Indian epic poems, etc.). Armenian history and culture take their origin in the dark depths of human history. In the IX-XI centuries, the Armenians were a people with rich and difficult history, but it was just then that the Armenian epic Daredevils of Sasun was born.
Dr. Yeghiazaryan will discuss the significance of Daredevils of Sasun to both Armenian culture and world culture.

The Folk Traditions of Musa Dagh-The folktales are vehicles of age-old manners, customs and folk wisdom. As such, they are instruments for asserting cultural identity, based on shared experiences and values. The oral tradition has been central to the lives of Musa Daghtsis as a form of popular entertainment during festivals and especially as a means to while away the long winter nights. Its importance has waned as the living conditions have changed after the relocation of Musa Daghtsis to

The Armenian Studies Program Presents: "Disappearing Armenian Monasteries in Turkey: The Lake Van Basin" by Ara Sarafian
University Business Center, Peters Auditorium, Rm. 191
Ara Sarafian is a historian by training and the director of the Gomidas Institute in London . He has been working in Turkey-including the Lake Van region-for over twenty years.
This powerpoint presentation by historian Ara Sarafian will present the results of a special survey the Gomidas Institute carried out within 40 kilometers of Aghtamar island in October 2006. The survey located 12 ancient Armenian monasteries that were still functioning in this region on the eve of WWI, and it recorded their current state. According to this survey, the condition of these monasteries varied from those that have completely destroyed, to those that are still standing on their last legs.
As part of this survey, Sarafian will also discuss what steps might be taken to help the preservation of the remaining structures today. According to the speaker, it is still possible to preserve what remains of Armenian art and architecture in this region. It is a matter of adequate organization and resources.
In his talk, Sarafian will present a photographic record of the different churches and monasteries, and he will discuss the possibilities of working in Turkey today.
