TALES FROM OVID

Date: March 27-29, 31-April 4
Place: Woods Theatre
Speech Arts Building

Faculty/Staff tickets only $15

When it was published in 1997, TALES FROM OVID was immediately recognized as the best rendering of Ovid in generations, a classic in its own right and a major book for Ted Hughes. For Hughes, one of the most admired and widely read poets of our day, had translated twenty-four of Ovid's stories--legends connected by their transformational motifs--with the elegance and passion that distinguished his own poems.

His vigorous, fluid poetry is drama itself and demands to be spoken aloud. Tim Supple and Simon Reade take ten of the tales --including the stories of Echo and Narcissus, of Venus and Adonis, of Pyramus and Thisbe, among others--and transform them into elegant works for the stage. Erotic, violent, and magical, this dramatization of TALES FROM OVID realizes the immense power of Hughes's original text, which Michael Hofmann celebrated in The Times (London) as "one of the great works of the century."

Ted Hughes was Poet Laureate of England and the author of many books of poetry. His works include Phedre, Birthday Letters, and Oresteia of Aeschylus, among others. He died in 1998.

The University Theatre production is directed by Ruth Griffin.

ARIS JANIGIAN-PRESENTING HIS NEW BOOK-RIVERBIG

Date: April 1, Wednesday
Time: 7:30 PM
Place: Fresno State
University Business Center
A. Peters Auditorium, Rm. 191

This introspective second novel from California writer Janigian (Bloodvine) relates the tale of an agrarian Armenian-American family scrambling to survive in 1964 Fresno. Farmer Andy Demerjian, 33, is kicked off their land by his brother, Abe, after a loan scheme between them goes bad. Unable to support his wife and two young children, Andy hauls produce to L.A. until a fortuitous run-in with two entrepreneurs, one of whom Andy knows from school.

Vibrant Armenian culture is smartly stitched into the plot, including historical rancor towa rd domineering Turks. Janigian's prose provides rich detail (and then some) on agricultural life in an engrossing, satisfying tale of betrayal, feud and redemption. (Mar.)

LEONARD OLSON: GOD, DARWIN, AND THE CULTURE WARS

Ethics Center Lecture

Leonard Olson: God, Darwin, and the Culture Wars

Most observers would agree that there is something like a cultural war taking place in America today, especially over the question of the origins of life on Earth. Is the choice as simple as one between evolution or creation? Extremists on both sides frame the issue poorly. As a result, a reasonable middle position is ignored. This talk will examine the middle and criticize the extremes.

Leonard Olson is a Lecturer in the Department of Philosophy at California State University, Fresno, where he has been teaching ethics courses since 1986. A native of the Central Valley, he was educated at San Francisco State and U. C. Davis.

Date: Wednesday, March 4, 2009
Time: 12-12:50 P.M.
Place: Alice Peters Auditorium in the University Business Center
